Train Up A Child: With Reverence For Yah

‘Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.’  Proverbs 22:6, Cepher Bible

I can testify that the above scripture is Truth.

I was placed into the Philadelphia, PA foster care system, from the age of thirteen months to 18 years. The last 8 years were truly heinous. I was subjected to (and overcame), difficult circumstances at a very young and impressionable age. The things I considered doing to survive would shock most readers. You might say to yourself (even in this day and age), ‘Oh come on Neorah;’ but I am here to tell you, without proper guidance and a strong tether to biblical principles, a child  can quickly find themselves caught-up in detrimental behaviors.

Fortunately, Yah would not have any of His children ensnared, or naively led into a trap. He has given His Laws and Commandments to parents and caregivers, with the expectation that we will teach them to our children while they are in their formative years;  and they are never too young to learn. I know this personally.

One woman’s gentle instruction laid the groundwork for me to survive those horrible years relatively unscathed. What she taught me from infancy to eleven years, has never left me.  The fact that she was actually teaching me Torah escaped me until I was well into my fifties. To be honest, I don’t think she realized it either.  In those days we simply called them ‘the commandments,’ and we saw ourselves as ‘Commandment-Keepers.’

Either way, thank you Nanna.

Teaching Children ‘The Law’

One thinking regarding the education of young children on the Ten Commandments, is that they  should be read verbatim as written in the bible,  and then rephrased in words based on the child’s age. The opinion is that the child will become accustomed to the actual wording of the Law and thus add another layer to the comprehension of it down the road. I did not do this for my son and granddaughter when they were in preschool. I began teaching them when they were around 5 ½ - 6yrs. Prior to that, it was just everyday ‘talks,’ listening to bible stories, and singing songs. Their first lessons included their bedtime prayers, saying ‘Grace’ or the ‘Blessing’ before meals. Do what is best for you. These are just suggestions.

The 1st Commandment

‘And Elohiym spoke all these words, saying, I am Yahuah Elohayka,

Which have brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other elohiym before me.’

Exodus 20:1-3, Cepher Bible
